Situation of the IST/HIV in 2005

Maria RaharinarivonirinaAt the national level, the results of  the HIV sero-screening sessions on the targeted groups at the shifting sites in 2005 shows that the country is being in intensively high epidemic phase. Among pregnant women from the general population, the rate is 0.16%. Among tubercular ones, the rate goes up to 0.91% and among IST patients, it is 0.69%. The highest rate being registered is that of the sexual workers: 1.36%. As a matter of fact, the SISAL’s strategy, which defines thorough interventions on the highly exposed groups, remains a prerequisite.

In our opinion, in order to get more efficiency, fight against AIDS should definitely consider care for IST patients. During the year of 2005, the two centers of SISAL could treat 7384 IST cases, of which 697 were sexual workers. The SISAL centers remain then one of the main devices that permit the limitation of the propagation of the IST, and the HIV at the same time on the most exposed groups. In fact, the reduction of the propagation of IST/HIV among these groups highly contributes to prevent its transmission to the general population. From the 45 cases being confirmed to be infected by HIV in 2005, 12 were identified at the two centers: 7 in Antananarivo and 5 in Tuléar. It was noted mostly in Tuléar that the new cases concern women. The protection of women deserves a greater attention.
The HIV prevalence in 2005 is low though a more thorough action is definitely required, particularly on the most exposed groups in order to stop its propagation on the general population.
